Social networking, especially in real estate, is continuing to gain popularity because the networks are FREE and easy to use.  Although being free and easy to use sounds great it has created the following challenges:

  1. Time wasting – Hey, since the application is free, you might as well just spend all day on it right?  Sadly this is happening to many real estate professionals, and their “networking” task is now resulting in burning countless hours with no results happening by the end of the day.  The “work” part in socialnetworking means that you need to set goals and get some results from your efforts each and every day.

  2. What do I do first? – One of the biggest benefits of major networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc is the aspect that you can start almost anywhere.  Due to the feature that you can start anywhere means that many real estate agents don’t start with a good foundation for success.

  3. What do I do each day? – Hey checking out the latest pictures everyone has uploaded is fun, but is that generating any business?  With the freedom of the networks comes the task of defining what you can do each day to get results from your social networking activities.  In real estate we have plenty to share, we just need to share the right pieces of information and add value so we can get help from those in our network.

In a nutshell then, we need to stop wasting time, start with the right first steps, and have tasks to do each and every day. 

Sounds easy…right?

It’s easier than you think to overcome each of these obstacles, we just need some simple action items to get the most from the time we spend networking.  First and foremost though, it is important to remember that “work” is a part of “networking”!  With work in mind, here are some steps to help you get the most out of any network.

  1. Time Wasting – Social networking can be a time sucker if you monitor all of the updates throughout the day.  Block out time in your calendar each day to stay in touch with those in your network.  When you want to keep in the conversation the most, set aside at least 3 times during the day to check on what’s going on.  Stick to your schedule and don’t get sucked in to checking out all of the pictures and videos of your friends!

  2. What to do first? – This can certainly vary depending on which network you join, but a good place to start is your profile.  Take time to fill it out in detail in order to get the most out of it.  Each network has its own set of requirements for the profile so take time to dig deep and make sure you don’t miss anything!

  3. What do I do each day? – Focusing on specific activities each and every day is essential to getting results from your network.  Each day consider the following: how to add value to those in your network, how many new connections can you make, how can you strengthen existing relationships.  With a focus on just these 3 simple actions you will be able to focus your activities to get the maximum amount of results.
